News  Tobin Bridge: Lead Paint Chip Advisory

4/07/2023
  • Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program

MassDOT is working in the Tobin Bridge area of Chelsea to pick up paint chips that may have fallen from the bridge.

What should I know?

  • Do not allow your children to touch or play near paint chips.
  • The paint chips from the Tobin Bridge likely contain lead which causes serious health problems in children. Lead harms the developing brains of young children.
  • MassDOT’s contractor will vacuum up the paint chips at locations near and under the Tobin Bridge and safely dispose them off site.
  • Weather permitting, work will begin first in parking lot areas. Paint chip removal activities will then shift to backyards, sidewalks, and other open areas on properties under the bridge. Work will continue monthly after that until the project to remove the paint from the bridge begins.

What can I do to keep my family safe?

  • Let the workers into your yard to pick up paint chips. Show the MassDOT workers where the chips are so that they can pick them up.
  • Get your young children tested for lead at their next well-child visit or sooner if you are concerned about lead exposure.
  • Call MassDOT at 857-492-0221 if you have questions about picking up the paint chips.
  • Call CLPPP at 1-800-532-9571 if you have questions about your child's health.
  • Review the ‘Protect Children from Leaded Paint Chips and Soil in Yards and Play Areas’ factsheet
